Kolkata, April 5 The Kolkata Knight Riders, struggling and increasingly directionless, need a strong turnaround to overcome their poor start when they face the in-form Punjab Kings in their IPL clash here on Monday.
While the three-time champions might point to the absence of key pacers like Mustafizur Rahman, Harshit Rana, Akash Deep, and Matheesha Pathirana as a reason for their early struggles, the bigger issue lies in a flawed team strategy that has left them facing a third consecutive defeat.
The decision not to retain Shreyas Iyer, who led them to the 2024 title, has drawn criticism, and it has only worsened the situation in hindsight.
Iyer went on to prove his worth by leading Punjab Kings to a runners-up finish in 2025, becoming the first captain to guide three different franchises – Delhi Capitals (2020), KKR (2024 champions), and PBKS (2025) – to the finals.
In contrast, KKR endured a disappointing campaign last season, finishing eighth for the first time since 2009.
Ajinkya Rahane, brought in as captain despite his limited T20 experience, has partially silenced critics by becoming their leading run-scorer. However, the team's strategy, including the appointment of Abhishek Nayar as head coach in place of Chandrakant Pandit, has come under scrutiny.
Nayar, incidentally, was the coach of UP Warriorz in this year's WPL, where they finished at the bottom.
The team's strategy is most evident in its combination.
Despite having three top New Zealand players – Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, and Rachin Ravindra – KKR has failed to effectively utilize their resources.
Allen has been the only one to get regular playing time, while Seifert, the second-highest run-scorer in the last T20 World Cup, and Ravindra, a versatile spin-bowling all-rounder, remain mostly on the bench.
Instead, KKR's continued reliance on Sunil Narine, a franchise regular since 2012, despite his declining form, has raised questions.
The situation is further complicated by the inclusion of all-rounder Cameron Green, who has been restricted by Cricket Australia from bowling, leaving the side with two overseas players not fully contributing.
Adding to this, Rovman Powell, another proven T20 performer, remains on the sidelines.
KKR's selection decisions appear increasingly puzzling.
Even their experienced support staff – Shane Watson, Dwayne Bravo, and Andre Russell – has not been able to provide clarity, making one wonder who is truly calling the shots at KKR?
While their bowling was expected to be a concern, their batting has also struggled.
Rahane's decision to open has yielded mixed results, and the team lacks depth beyond No. 5.
In their first home match, they were bowled out for 161 in just 16 overs while chasing 227 against Sunrisers Hyderabad on a batting-friendly Eden.
The lower middle order, comprising Ramandeep Singh and Anukul Roy, lacks the firepower, while Narine has been pushed down to No. 8, reflecting the lack of a settled plan.
In contrast, Punjab Kings are in good form.
Led by Iyer, who knows the conditions at Eden well, they have won two matches in a row.
Young Cooper Connolly has been a revelation at No. 3, scoring 108 runs in two matches, while Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh have provided explosive starts.
Iyer has anchored the middle overs with assurance.
Their bowling unit, featuring Arshdeep Singh, Marco Jansen, and Vijaykumar Vyshak, looks balanced, with veteran leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal adding further bite.
For KKR, Kartik Tyagi and young Angkrish Raghuvanshi have shown some promise, but these individual sparks may not be enough against a well-oiled Punjab unit.
