Kolkata, March 26 An unidentified assailant shot and killed a young man, while his friend was seriously injured in the Patuli area here past midnight, a police official said on Thursday.
Rahul Dey (35) was found lying in a pool of blood around 12:30 am at a residential building in the East Phulbagan locality. His friend, Jeet Mukherjee, who owns a flat there, was also found lying by his side in an injured state.
Both were rushed to a local hospital, where Dey was declared dead on arrival, while Mukherjee was admitted in a critical condition, the police official said.
Police said that several people, including Dey and Mukherjee, were present on the roof of the building and were having food and drinks when an argument broke out, and shots were fired.
The identities of the assailants and the motive behind the attack are yet to be ascertained, the officer said, adding that Dey was invited to Mukherjee's flat.
Police said that according to the neighbours and his family, Dey was associated with the Trinamool Congress, but the killing was not related to any political rivalry.
