Kolkata Protest Focuses on University Governance.webp

Kolkata, March 27 The sit-in by SFI at Presidency University over the demands for the university's own entrance tests and student union elections entered its fourth day on Friday.

The student wing of the CPI(M) vowed to continue the protest until their demands are met by the university authorities.

"We will not leave the Presidency portico (the venue of the protest) until the authorities give us an assurance that the admission process should be based on the university's own entrance tests, and that guidelines on this matter will be notified," said Ushashree Mitra, a spokesperson for SFI.

Currently, the undergraduate and postgraduate entrance tests at Presidency University are conducted by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board (WBJEEB).

Around 50 students were participating in the protest, despite the heat and humidity.

The protesting students also demanded immediate elections to the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) and the student union.

"We want the ICC and student union elections to be held without delay and in a democratic manner," said one of the protesters.

The protesting students also raised concerns about the implementation of the National Education Policy and called for clarity on course structures and bridging courses.

A university official said that talks were ongoing with the students regarding their demands, but they must understand that some of these demands cannot be addressed immediately until a suitable mechanism is found.
