Koridang District Under Night Curfew Amidst Election-Related Violence.webp

April 6, Kohima: In Nagaland, ahead of the upcoming by-election to the Koridang Assembly Constituency, violence in the Longkhum and Mangmetong villages since last night has resulted in one death.

Confirming this, Additional SP & PRO of the Mokokchung Police, said that stone-pelting started in the Longkhum village around midnight, leading to three people being injured, one of whom died.

He said that 16 people have been arrested. The Additional SP stated that the situation is now under control, but remains tense and volatile.

In Mangmetong village, vandalism reportedly occurred around 7:00 AM this morning, resulting in 12 vehicles being damaged. There were no reports of any injuries. Police have arrested one suspect in connection with this incident.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer, Mokokchung, Ajit Kumar Verma, has imposed a night curfew in parts of the district under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023, citing the likelihood of a breach of public peace ahead of the by-election to the 28 Koridang Assembly Constituency.

The curfew has been imposed in the Longkhum village, Mangmetong village, and the Alichen area, including the 2nd NAP Camp, prohibiting the gathering of five or more people.

The 'night curfew' will remain in effect daily from 6:00 PM to 5:00 AM until further orders.

The order noted that with the Model Code of Conduct in effect throughout the Mokokchung district, maintaining law and order is essential to ensure that the by-election is conducted in a free, fair, and peaceful manner.

Exemptions have been granted to police, armed forces, and security personnel on duty, magistrates and government officials on official or election duty, as well as for medical services and individuals engaged in essential or emergency services.

The polls are scheduled for April 9.
