Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani announced today that she was dissolving parliament to allow for early elections after lawmakers failed to elect a successor. This marks a new crisis in the Balkan country, which had already held a snap election in December after nearly a year of political deadlock. Kosovo's assembly had until midnight on Thursday to elect a new president to replace Osmani, who took office in 2021. A vote failed yesterday due to a lack of a quorum in the 120-member assembly. Prime Minister Albin Kurti blamed the failure on the opposition's boycott of the session. Osmani stated that the situation was entirely avoidable and that lawmakers had ample time to choose a president.
