February 16, New Delhi – In the central Serbian city of Kragujevac, thousands of anti-government protesters, led by students, gathered on Sunday, vowing to continue protests that began after last year's deadly collapse of the Novi Sad railway station canopy.
The rally, held on Serbia's Statehood Day, drew university students and local residents who carried banners and national flags in the city center. Protesters pledged to maintain pressure through continued demonstrations and civic action.
The protest movement emerged following the collapse of a concrete canopy at Novi Sad's main railway station on November 1, 2024, which killed 16 people.
The tragedy triggered widespread public anger, with demonstrators blaming systemic corruption, poor oversight, and a lack of accountability in public infrastructure projects.
