Guwahati, April 7 Kunki Chowdhury, a debutant for the AJP, finds herself at the center of a controversial situation, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma threatening legal action against her parents over alleged consumption of beef. This comes as Chowdhury dismissed the accusations as "baseless" and prepares to challenge veteran BJP leader Vijay Kumar Gupta in the Guwahati Central constituency.
The constituency, created during the delimitation exercise in 2023, has approximately 1.93 lakh voters.
When the opposition Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) announced 27-year-old Chowdhury's candidacy, it seemed like a straightforward victory for 70-year-old veteran BJP leader Gupta, given the ruling party's considerable election machinery.
However, as time passed, Chowdhury's growing popularity, particularly due to her age, Gen Z appeal, and strong educational background, surprised everyone.
Chowdhury returned to Guwahati last year after completing a Master's in Education Leadership from the prestigious University College London.
The first-time AJP candidate for the prestigious Guwahati Central legislative constituency aims to address the specific needs of the area, while promising to act as a bridge between the government and the public.
As a young leader, Chowdhury brings fresh perspectives and energy, leveraging her academic background to drive positive change in an environment where the ruling BJP has fielded heavyweight Gupta, who even Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a roadshow for last month.
She quickly connected with the people, particularly young voters, and extensively used social media in her campaigning.
