Jalaun (UP), April 2 An incident of theft involving cash and valuables worth lakhs has been reported from the Kotwali Orai police station premises, where the houses of two sub-inspectors were targeted, officials said on Thursday.

Circle Officer Rajeev Kumar Sharma said Sub-Inspector Uday Pratap Singh, currently posted in Kalpi but still residing in a government residence within the Orai Kotwali premises, had filed a complaint stating that unidentified thieves broke into his house by cutting a window with a gas cutter.

The perpetrators allegedly broke open a wardrobe and made off with Rs 3 lakh in cash and gold and silver jewellery worth several lakhs, police said.

A similar theft was reported from the residence of another Sub-Inspector, Ashok Kumar Singh, who is currently posted in Jhansi but had not vacated his allotted quarters in Orai.

Both police officers were on leave when the incident took place, officials said.

"Based on the complaint, a case has been registered and efforts are underway to solve the case at the earliest," Sharma said.

The incident, which occurred within a high-security police premises, has raised questions about policing and security arrangements in the district.
