Aizawl, March 22 The president of the Mizoram Congress' youth wing on Sunday accused Chief Minister Lalduhoma of rapidly accumulating massive wealth through the strategic acquisition of large tracts of land near key development zones.
The state youth Congress president, Laltawnliana, alleged that the chief minister has purchased large tracts of land around the Vantawng Falls viewpoint and in the Kanghmun South area in Serchhip district.
There was no immediate reaction from the chief minister or his party, the Zoram People's Movement.
He said that despite Lalduhoma portraying himself as a man of modest means, his actions since becoming chief minister confirmed that he has rapidly become one of the wealthiest figures in the state.
"The chief minister's actions confirm a trajectory of rapid enrichment that is unprecedented among those who have held the chief minister's office," Laltawnliana said.
He alleged that in early 2024, the chief minister reportedly acquired 25 to 30 acres of land in the Buangpui area near Vantawng Falls from five owners.
"This land is strategically located to claim compensation from the Rs 34.50 crore earmarked for the installation of a ropeway at Vantawng falls under the Development of Iconic Tourist Centres to Global Scale of the Special Assistance to State for Capital Investment scheme," the youth Congress leader said.
"Despite being in office for a short time, Lalduhoma has become a chief minister who has accumulated a vast amount of wealth the fastest in the history of the state," he claimed.
He further alleged the chief minister has also bought land from four different owners in the Kanghmun south area, some of which was cleared for shifting cultivation or farming in late February this year.
"Land purchased in Kanghmun South is situated within the proposed footprint of the Thenzawl Peace City project, raising concerns over potential conflicts of interest," Laltawnliana claimed.
The Congress leader alleged that the acquisitions are not merely personal investments but were positioned to capitalise on multi-crore government infrastructure projects.
"Despite being private acquisitions, there are plans to hand over the management of these lands to a specific government department, which is tied to major upcoming development projects," he said.
