Mumbai, March 24 BJP MLA Raju Todsam said that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner's alleged absence during a scheduled meeting with a legislative committee amounted to a discourtesy towards the panel and the tribal community it represents.
Presenting the first report of the Scheduled Tribe Welfare Committee in the Maharashtra legislative assembly, Todsam said that the committee had visited the BMC headquarters on November 4, 2025, as part of its official tour, but Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani did not attend the meeting despite being present in his office.
"The visit of the committee was duly communicated to the commissioner's office. However, he remained absent, which was not appropriate and reflected poorly on the institution as well as the tribal community," Todsam said.
He added that the committee, constituted to raise issues concerning tribal communities in the state, had received due courtesies at other institutions, including universities and government offices, during its visits.
"A notice of breach of privilege was moved against the commissioner on November 4 last year, but no appropriate action has been taken so far. I request the Speaker of the assembly to issue suitable directions in the matter," Todsam said.
Responding to the issue, Speaker Rahul Narwekar said that an explanation had been sought from Gagrani and it has been received, and the matter had been referred to the legislature's Privileges Committee.
"An appropriate decision will be taken soon," Narwekar said.
