
Writers and scholars gathered at Tagore Hall to remember the eminent thinker Farooq Budgami, highlighting his literary legacy through papers, poetry, and a book launch.
February 17, Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages, in collaboration with the Fariq Memorial Foundation of Budgam, organized a literary event at the Conference Hall of Tagore Hall to mark the 21st death anniversary of the renowned thinker, poet, and translator, Farooq Budgami. A large number of writers, poets, intellectuals, and literature enthusiasts attended the program.
The event was presided over by the noted writer and poet, Akhtar Mansoor, while the eminent poet and author, Fayaz Talgami, was the Chief Guest. Prominent actors, Nazir Josh and Muntazir Mohi-ud-Din, were present as guests of honor. The program began with a Na'at presented by Engineer Bilal Ahmad Qasmi, setting a reverent tone for the gathering.
In his welcome address, Dr. Mudassar Yousuf described Farooq Budgami as a multidimensional literary figure who made significant contributions to poetry, criticism, and translation. He said that Budgami's writings reflected intellectual maturity, social awareness, and cultural consciousness, adding that remembering such figures helps preserve literary traditions.
Dr. Abdul Wahid presented a detailed paper on Budgami's life and literary contributions, stating that his poetry carries contemporary sensibility, intellectual depth, and strong human values. He noted that Budgami's translations helped bridge languages and cultures, opening new dimensions for Kashmiri literature.
During the event, the book, Kath Sabzaran Hanz by Syed Masood Shadab, was formally released. Saleem Yousuf presented a critical review, terming the work a valuable addition to contemporary literature and appreciating the author's stylistic maturity.
A Tarhi Mushaira based on a line from Budgami's ghazal was also held, in which several poets paid tribute through thematic poetry that received wide appreciation from the audience.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest Fayaz Talgami said that Farooq Budgami was a distinctive poet and a profound thinker who used literature as a tool for social awakening. He added that Budgami's works continue to inspire younger generations and called for continuity of such literary programs.
In his presidential address, Akhtar Mansoor said that Budgami transformed literature into a medium of intellectual and social consciousness, blending tradition with modernity. He remarked that Budgami's works would remain relevant due to their human values and cultural depth, and urged young writers to study his thought and style seriously.
The proceedings were conducted by Dr. Shabnam Rafiq, Assistant Editor of the Cultural Academy. The event concluded with a vote of thanks and a resolve to continue highlighting the literary contributions of Farooq Budgami in the future.
