LPG Distribution Monitoring Strengthened in Meghalaya

LPG Distribution Monitoring Strengthened in Meghalaya.webp

Shillong, March 28 The Food and Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department of the Meghalaya government on Saturday said that the supply of domestic LPG has stabilized in the state after a brief disruption earlier this month.

There is no issue with the supply of domestic LPG in the state at present, and over 22,000 domestic LPG cylinders were supplied between March 25 and 27, it said.

"Domestic LPG is being supplied in the normal course, and the government is closely monitoring distribution to ensure that all genuine consumers receive their entitlement without disruption," the Directorate of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs said in a statement.

However, it maintained that the supply of commercial cylinders was affected due to a supply cap imposed by the Centre.

Explaining the earlier disruption, the directorate said, "A temporary disruption was observed due to a combination of factors, including policy adjustments, the rollout of e-KYC requirements, operational hesitation at the distributor level, and the spread of misinformation leading to avoidable panic among consumers."

On commercial LPG, it said, "Commercial LPG continues to face constraints primarily due to the cap imposed by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas," adding that the state government has taken up the matter with the Centre seeking enhancement and suitable relaxation.

Highlighting Meghalaya's challenges, the statement said, "Given the state's dependence on tourism and hospitality, coupled with the absence of PNG infrastructure and logistical challenges due to hilly terrain, such constraints have a relatively higher impact on the state."

The directorate said that monitoring has been strengthened in the state and district LPG committees, along with daily reporting and coordination with oil marketing companies.
