Lucknow, April 7 A woman attempted to set herself on fire near Gate No. 3 of Lok Bhavan here on Tuesday by pouring a flammable substance on herself, but alert officials present at the spot foiled the attempt, police said.
The woman has been identified as Sanghya Singh (50), a resident of the New Srinagar locality in Lucknow who is currently living in the Indira Nagar area.
In a statement issued here, police said Singh poured a flammable substance over herself and attempted self-immolation. Personnel deployed at the spot acted promptly, intervened and rescued her.
She was taken safely to the Hazratganj police station, where she is currently being questioned. Preliminary interrogation revealed that she is involved in a land dispute with a neighbour, police said.
Singh alleged that the dispute pertains to land in the Manaknagar police station area and that she had lodged multiple complaints with the Revenue Department regarding its demarcation.
According to police, the Revenue Department conducted a land measurement on February 16 in the presence of police personnel, but Singh expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome. She further alleged that her land had been encroached upon by an individual named Iqbal and demanded legal action against him.
Police said Singh had earlier attempted self-immolation at Lok Bhavan on February 27 as well. At the time, police intervened, saved her and handed her over to the Manaknagar police station.
Officials said the Manaknagar police had already initiated the process for resolving the matter legally by corresponding with the Revenue Department.
Police are currently counselling Singh and coordinating with the concerned departments to ensure an expeditious resolution of the dispute, the statement said.
