Burhanpur, April 10 A village in Madhya Pradesh's Burhanpur district has decided to prohibit the use of profanity and will impose a penalty of ₹500 or one hour of community cleaning if anyone is found using offensive language.
This decision was made by the gram panchayat of Borsar village. It adopted a resolution to curb the use of profanity, particularly those targeting women.
Deputy sarpanch Vinod Shinde said that anyone found using abusive language will either have to pay a fine of ₹500 or undertake one hour of village cleaning.
Posters and banners put up across the village, located about 20 km from the district headquarters, describe Borsar as "Madhya Pradesh's first abuse-free village".
Ashwin Patil, a local youth, said that verbal abuse often escalates minor issues into serious disputes.
"Abusive language vitiates the atmosphere of the village. Representatives and elders decided to make the village abuse-free," he said.
Women in the village have welcomed the initiative.
Jayshree Chaudhary said that the decision has deterred villagers from using abusive language, and noted that even children were found using objectionable words earlier.
