Chennai, March 28 Popular film director Sundar C is set to make his electoral debut in the April 23 elections to the Tamil Nadu Assembly as a candidate of the Puthiya Neethi Katchi, a constituent of the AIADMK-led NDA, from the Madurai Central constituency.
PNK founder-president A C Shanmugam made this announcement and said that Sundar will contest the election under the AIADMK's 'Two Leaves' symbol.
Confirming the development, Sundar's wife and senior BJP leader Khushbu Sundar said that he aims to be a "people's person" and serve the state that has supported his three-decade career in cinema.
"As his wife, I stand with immense pride and am confident that the man who has entertained the people of Tamil Nadu for the last 30 years, will give his best to those who have made him what he is today," she said in a social media post.
She further noted that he is contesting with the "blessings" of his family and the support of AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, BJP state president Nainar Nagendran, and other NDA leaders.
The PNK leadership indicated that the candidate for the second seat, expected to be allotted from the BJP's quota, will be announced on March 30. The formal introduction of the candidates is scheduled for Monday in Chennai.
Madurai Central is currently a stronghold of the ruling DMK and is held by Information Technology and Digital Services Minister PTR Palanivel Thiyagarajan.
The Puthiya Neethi Katchi (which literally translates as New Justice Party), now enjoys caste-based support from Mudaliyars, derives its name from the Justice Party of early 20th Century, a forerunner of the Dravidian Movement. Interestingly, Thiyagarajan's grandfather PT Rajan was a famous Justice Party leader.
Sundar C’s entry adds to the growing list of film personalities participating in the high-stakes 2026 assembly elections.
