Mumbai, March 10 Jishnu Dev Varma was sworn in as the 22nd Governor of Maharashtra on Tuesday.

Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, administered the oath to Varma at the Darbar Hall of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in Mumbai.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, congratulated Varma, a member of the Manikya royal dynasty of Tripura and former Governor of Telangana, on his appointment.

The Governor was given a ceremonial guard of honour by the Indian Navy immediately after the oath-taking ceremony.

Governor of Gujarat, Acharya Devvrat, held the additional charge as Governor of Maharashtra following the election of C P Radhakrishnan as the Vice President on September 12 last year.

At Tuesday's ceremony, Maharashtra Chief Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal read out the warrant of appointment issued by President Droupadi Murmu, regarding Varma's appointment as Governor.

Varma served as Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura from 2018 to 2023 and was responsible for the portfolios of Finance, Rural Development, and Power.

Varma, who has a keen interest in modern art, painting, and sculpture, was the convener of the Tripura chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) and coordinated the organization's activities in Northeast India, according to an official release. He is also a noted writer and poet, it added.
