Nanded, March 11 The administration of the Nanded district in central Maharashtra has intensified efforts to ensure strict implementation of a law aimed at curbing illegal sex determination and female foeticide, an official has said.

District Collector Rahul Kardile has directed officials to take firm action against such unlawful practices and strictly implement the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act.

Significantly, the state government has announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh to individuals who provide credible information on sex determination and abortion rackets. The health department has launched the informer scheme to improve the gender ratio and prevent female foeticide.

Kardile was speaking at a meeting of the District-Level Vigilance Committee held on March 9 at the collector's office. During the meeting, a detailed review of the registration and renewal of sonography and Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) centres in the district was conducted.

The district collector emphasized that illegal sex determination is a serious offence and directed the concerned departments to work in coordination to curb such practices.

He stressed the need for large-scale awareness campaigns with the support of social organisations to stop illegal sex determination activities.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) department has also been instructed to remain vigilant to curb unauthorized abortions.
