Maharashtra Gasification Project: India's Push for Energy Security.webp

New Delhi, March 14 New Era Cleantech Solutions commenced the development of India's first greenfield Integrated Coal Gasification and Carbon Capture Complex at Bhadrawati in Chandrapur, Maharashtra, with an investment of ₹20,000 crore, on Saturday.

This development is significant at a time when global gas supplies have been disrupted due to the West Asia conflict and constraints around the strategic Strait of Hormuz, through which a large share of global LNG trade passes.

This situation has highlighted India's vulnerability to external supply shocks in fuels such as LPG and LNG.

By converting India's abundant domestic coal resources into critical industrial inputs, the Chandrapur complex is expected to contribute to reducing dependence on imported chemicals, fertilizers, and fuels, while strengthening long-term energy security.

Once operational, the facility will process more than 5 million metric tonnes of coal annually, producing ammonia, ammonium nitrate, and mono ethylene glycol in the first phase, with future expansion into products including urea, sustainable aviation fuel, and ethanol.

The project was first cleared by the government of Maharashtra in 2022 and aligns with the national vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat by strengthening India's domestic manufacturing ecosystem.

"This complex will not only strengthen manufacturing self-reliance but also contribute to the creation of a circular carbon economy by utilizing captured emissions productively," said Madhusudan Agrawal, Chairman, New Era Cleantech Solutions.
