Mumbai, March 6 More than a month after his death in a plane crash, former Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar was prominently featured in the state assembly. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis effusively praised him during his budget speech on Friday, and announced a memorial in his honor.

Fadnavis, who presented the budget for 2026-27 in the assembly as the state's finance minister, praised Pawar for his administrative skills and financial management abilities while he served in the cabinet.

Referring to Pawar's long political and legislative career, the CM stated that the senior leader had handled the finance portfolio multiple times and possessed a deep understanding of the state's fiscal system and development priorities.

Pawar, who died in the January 28 plane crash near the Baramati airport in his home district of Pune, was due to present the 12th budget.

The former NCP president was a Deputy Chief Minister in the Fadnavis cabinet and handled the finance and planning portfolios. After his death, Fadnavis took over these key portfolios.

The chief minister announced that the government had decided to establish an award in Pawar's name to recognize outstanding work in the fields of administration and public service.

He stated that a memorial would be set up to honor the late politician and highlight his contributions to the state's political and administrative landscape.

Fadnavis emphasized that Pawar's experience and leadership were crucial in maintaining fiscal discipline while ensuring continued focus on development and welfare.

There were emotional scenes in the Lower House as Fadnavis began presenting the budget.

As he began his speech, MLAs raised slogans of "Ajit Dada Amar Rahe," paying tribute to the late leader.
