Beed, February 21 A 22-year-old man allegedly committed suicide due to harassment by moneylenders in the Beed district of Maharashtra, leading to protests by his family, who kept his body at the local police station for over four hours while demanding the immediate arrest of the perpetrators.
A police official from the Dindrud police station stated that the parents of Dharmaraj Arjun Bade, a resident of Gavandra in the Dharur tehsil, had taken a loan of Rs 50,000 from a couple of moneylenders, who are accused of repeatedly abusing and harassing the family over repayment.
On Thursday, Bade and his mother Sangita had approached the Dharur police station to file a complaint, but were allegedly threatened by a person who claimed that the family would face counter-accusations, the official said.
"Bade hanged himself from a tree on the Kari Shivar on the Telgaon-Dharur road on Friday morning. His family claimed that he ended his life due to the distress caused by the harassment by moneylenders. They kept his body at the Dindrud police station for over four hours, demanding the immediate arrest of the perpetrators," the official said.
The protest was called off late Friday evening after a case was registered at the Dindrud police station, following which Bade was cremated in his native Gavandra village, the official added.
