Shahjahanpur (UP), March 31 Driven by an obsessive love for his maternal cousin and unwilling to accept a refusal, a man drew inspiration from the 1975 cult classic "Sholay" and scaled a mobile tower here, demanding to marry the woman.
However, unlike Veeru from "Sholay," whose wish to marry Basanti was eventually granted after he performed the dangerous stunt, luck was not on the side of 23-year-old Raju Pal, who was taken into custody by the police and sent for counseling.
The incident unfolded in Kachhiyani Khera village, under the Tilhar police station area, on Monday, drawing a large crowd.
Pal (23), who claimed to have been in love with the woman for the last eight years, threatened to jump from the tower if he was not allowed to marry her, police said on Tuesday.
Pal's proposal to marry the woman was rejected by her family. His family, too, never supported him, they said.
Angered by the repeated refusals, Pal climbed the tower, causing panic in the area. Upon receiving information about the incident, a police team rushed to the spot.

Station House Officer, Tilhar, Jugal Kishore, said that Pal has been taken into custody and is under observation. He is also being counseled to prevent him from taking any such steps in the future.
