March 17, New Delhi: Heavy snowfall overnight caused a major traffic jam near the Atal Tunnel close to Manali on Monday.
Traffic on the Atal Tunnel route connecting Manali with Leh-Ladakh has been temporarily closed by the administration due to heavy snowfall, as driving conditions have become unsafe for tourists and locals.
For the past two days, the administration and rescue teams have been working to safely evacuate tourists stranded near the Atal Tunnel at Rohtang.
Authorities said that around 1,500 tourist vehicles have been rescued so far, and operations are still underway to evacuate vehicles stuck at the North Portal of the tunnel.
