Imphal, April 5 Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Sunday asserted that his government's objective is to strengthen the bond among communities and restore peace in the northeastern state.
Singh was speaking to reporters at the site of the proposed Inter State Truck Terminus in Jiribam district.
The CM is on a three-day visit to Jiribam from April 4.
"My government's objective is to strengthen the bond among different communities and restore peace in the state. We also want to develop Jiribam into a model district,” Singh said.
He said the Manipur government would explore tourism projects near the site of the truck terminus, following consultation with the Town Planning Department.
Singh had on Saturday said Jiribam made history as the state's first district where all communities came together to restore peace, after three years of unrest.
Addressing people during a community interaction programme at New Alipur Rongmei Naga village, the chief minister said he decided to visit Jiribam for the second time in the last two months, as people from various communities agreed to sit together under one platform.
“The gathering reflected a spirit of unity, where people from different communities came together to share their thoughts and aspirations for peace, mutual understanding, and communal harmony,” Singh had said in a post on X on Saturday evening.
“Such meaningful engagements are vital in strengthening bonds among communities, and building a shared vision for a peaceful and progressive society. I firmly believe that these programmes should be conducted more widely and regularly to nurture goodwill, encourage dialogue, and ensure that the benefits of development and welfare initiatives reach every section of society,” he added.
At least 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in the ethnic violence between Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and hills-based Kuki-Zo groups since May, 2023.
