Jammu, March 22 Vijaybhoomi University and its affiliated colleges extended the Kanyathon initiative to Jammu on Sunday, following Bengaluru and Mumbai, by organizing the first-ever edition of the girl child empowerment run in the winter capital during the Navratra festival.
The event, held at the University of Jammu campus, saw participation from over 1,000 runners, including students, police personnel, and educators, who ran under the theme "Say Yes to Life, No to Drugs."
"Kanyathon" is an initiative of students from the Jagdish Sheth School of Management, IFIM College, IFIM College of Law, and Vijaybhoomi University. It was organized by the Centre for Developmental Education (CDE) in association with the Jammu-based Lalitaditya Sports Education and Health Organisation, a spokesperson said.
The run was flagged off by Shiv Kumar Sharma, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Jammu–Samba–Kathua Range, who highlighted the role of women in security forces and encouraged girls to lead with confidence and courage.
"India's daughters have never waited to be called; they have led. On our borders, in our forests, on our seas, women in uniform have proven that courage knows no gender. The CRPF, the BSF, the Indian Army, the J&K Police — women stand at the front in every force that guards this nation," DIG said.
Participants included schoolgirls, mothers, and women police personnel, many running in solidarity to spread awareness against drug abuse and to advocate for safety, dignity, and equal opportunities for girls.
Organizers said the Jammu edition marked the 15th national run of the initiative, which has previously been held in Bengaluru, the Mumbai region, and Pilani, collectively drawing thousands of participants across the country this year.
