Prayagraj (UP), April 3 A woman has filed an FIR against a neurosurgeon in the Civil Lines area here, alleging inappropriate touching and misconduct during a medical examination, police said on Friday.
The Civil Lines police station registered a case on Thursday against Dr Kartikeya Sharma under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 74 (assault with intent to outrage the modesty of a woman), Section 76 (compelling a woman to disrobe), and Section 127(2) (wrongful confinement), officials said.
In her complaint, the woman alleged that she had visited the doctor's clinic with her brother around 10 pm on Wednesday. Her brother subsequently returned home while she waited for her turn.
She alleged that when she entered the doctor's cabin, he asked other patients present there to leave, shut both doors of the cabin, and asked her to remove some of her clothes before allegedly molesting her.
The woman further alleged that the doctor then asked her to remove all her clothes, following which she refused treatment, got dressed and left the cabin.
Dr Sharma denied the charges, stating that the woman had been under his treatment for the past three to four months and had also been admitted to his hospital in January.
He said she was treated jointly by him and psychiatrist Saurabh Tandon during that period.
The doctor claimed that the patient exhibited aggressive behaviour and had complained of symptoms such as tingling sensations, insomnia and depression. On Wednesday, she had reported tingling on the left side of her body and requested examination, he said.
Dr Sharma said that a female attendant was present at the door during the examination, which involved checking her face and abdomen, and was completed within one to one-and-a-half minutes.
He added that CCTV footage could verify the sequence of events and claimed that had anything improper occurred, the woman would have raised an alarm.
Alleging ulterior motives, the doctor said he suspected that some people involved in extortion rackets may have instigated the woman to level accusations.
He also claimed that the woman was suffering from "psychiatric issues and could make unfounded allegations".
Police said further investigation into the matter is underway.
