Medininagar, April 7 A 25-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly murdering two people by smashing their heads with stones in the Palamu district of Jharkhand, police said on Tuesday.

Both murders took place on January 16, one in the area around the Chainpur police station and the other in the area around the Town police station. The accused, identified as Chunmun Chaudhary alias Ajit Chaudhary from Kalyanpur village, has been apprehended, they said.

"We arrested the accused on Monday with the help of technical and human intelligence. He has confessed to the crime," Palamu Superintendent of Police Reeshma Ramesan said.

The accused told the police that on January 15, he was consuming intoxicants along with Kariwa alias Chhotu (18) and Shankar Ram (37) near the Daltonganj railway station when he learned that Shankar had money with him, but he was not spending it, the SP said.

"Thereafter, he, along with Kariwa, took Shankar to the Ranibandh area in the Chainpur police station area, robbed him of Rs 1,300, and crushed his head with a stone," the SP said.

They also attempted to burn the body, another police officer said.

After that, both accused returned to the railway station. Thereafter, during a quarrel, when Kariwa threatened to reveal the matter if he did not get a share of the money, the accused took him near the railway bridge and crushed his head with a stone, Palamu Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Rajeev Ranjan said.

In this connection, two FIRs were lodged – one at the Chainpur police station on January 17 and the other at the Town police station on January 16, the SDPO said.

The accused has been sent to judicial custody, police said.
