Metro Services Briefly Suspended After Fender Issue at Mahakaran.webp

Kolkata, March 24 A small section of the rubber fender of a platform screen door at Mahakaran station on the Green Line was seen smoldering as a train entered on Tuesday, the Metro Railway said in a statement.

When a train entered Mahakaran station in the afternoon, and the platform screen doors (PSD) opened, a small section of the rubber fender "showed signs of burning," an official said.

The official said that it was not a fire incident and no sparks were reported.

Metro staff and security personnel present at the station immediately brought the situation under control, he said.

"As a precautionary measure, services on the down (DN) line between Howrah Maidan and Sector V were suspended for 53 minutes to allow engineers to inspect the system, including the power supply," the Metro official said.

Passengers on the affected train were asked to deboard as a safety step.

A Metro spokesperson said it was not a case of any flame or spark noticed in the underground metro station platform, but part of the rubber strip was found "burnt" and "quickly extinguished".

The rubber fender—a protective rubber strip fitted along the edge of the platform—is installed next to what is technically known as Platform Screen Doors (PSDs).

The automatic glass barriers placed between the platform and the train tracks. The doors remain closed for safety and open only when a train stops and aligns properly, allowing passengers to board and deboard safely.

"All safety systems are in place and are regularly monitored. The exact cause is being investigated," he added.
