Mexican Cartel Violence Escalates After Drug Lord’s Death.webp

February 23, New Delhi – Mexican drug lord Nemesio Oseguera, widely known as ‘El Mencho,’ was killed in a military raid on Sunday.

Mexico's Defence Ministry said a shootout in the western state of Jalisco left Oseguera critically injured, and he died during an air transfer to Mexico City. The ministry added that U.S. authorities had provided “complementary information” for the operation.

An ex-police officer, Oseguera led the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. His killing marks a significant victory in Mexico's war on drug cartels, which are responsible for smuggling billions of dollars in cocaine and fentanyl into the U.S.

The operation triggered widespread violence, with burned-out cars and armed individuals blocking highways in more than half a dozen states. Mexican media reported particularly heavy unrest in northern and western regions.

Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro urged residents to stay indoors until the situation is under control, while the U.S. embassy advised its citizens to shelter in place.
