Latehar (Jharkhand), March 28 A court in Latehar district of Jharkhand sentenced six people to life imprisonment on Saturday for the gang rape of a minor.

The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge (Second) cum Special Judge (POCSO), Sanjay Kumar Dubey, sentenced Kariman Ganjhu (38), Mukesh Ganjhu (27), Suresh Ganjhu (29), Pintu Ganjhu (25), Birendra Ganjhu (23), and Rohit Ganjhu (25) to life imprisonment.

The court found them guilty under Section 376D of the IPC (punishment for gang rape) and also imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on each of them. If they fail to pay the fine, they will have to undergo an additional two years of imprisonment.

Additionally, under Section 6 of the POCSO Act (punishment for sexual assault), the court sentenced them to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh each. If they fail to pay this fine, they will undergo an additional one year of imprisonment.

All sentences will run concurrently.

On May 10, 2022, the victim, who was a teenager at the time of the incident, had gone with her father to a wedding ceremony held about 200 metres away from their house in Chandwa.

Around 3 am, on her father's instructions, she went home to put her younger sister to sleep. After putting her sister to bed, when she was closing the door of the house to return to the venue, the accused abducted her, took her to a nearby location, and gang-raped her.

An FIR was registered at the Chandwa police station on May 11.

A total of 10 witnesses were presented by Special Public Prosecutor Shivshankar Ram against the accused in the court.
