Missing Girl's Relative Allegedly Assaulted by Police - Jharkhand HC Orders Investigation.webp

Ranchi, April 9 The Jharkhand High Court on Thursday directed Director General of Police (DGP) Tadasha Mishra to submit a sealed report on the alleged assault of a relative of a missing girl by the police.

The court was hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by Rekha Devi, whose daughter has been missing since July 31 last year.

Although the Pindrajoda Police registered an FIR, the whereabouts of the missing girl are yet to be ascertained.

The court was informed earlier that Rekha Devi's uncle-in-law, Sabapad Mahto, was picked up by the Pindrajoda Police and taken to the police station, where he was severely assaulted by the law enforcement officials, resulting in injuries.

The court ordered that Sabapad Mahto be clinically examined by a team of doctors at the state capital's military hospital to assess his injuries.

The medical report of Sabapad Mahto confirmed that he had suffered head injuries, which may have further damaged his brain, Rekha Devi's counsel informed the court.

The court questioned the DGP as to what could have led the police to assault Sabapad.

He belongs to the family of the victim who is missing and is not involved in any case whatsoever, the bench said.

The DGP's report will have to be submitted in a sealed envelope before the High Court, which will hear the matter again on April 10.

Meanwhile, the DGP said that a one-man committee headed by a DIG-rank officer has been constituted to investigate the matter.

The officer-in-charge of the Pindrajoda police station has also been suspended, the DGP said.
