Aizawl, March 27, 2026: A team of eight journalists from Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, participating in a PIB Press Tour organized by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India, met Mizoram Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), at Lok Bhavan in Aizawl today.
During the meeting, Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh highlighted Mizoram's significant strategic importance, despite its relatively small population and compact geographical area. He pointed out that the state is uniquely positioned at the tri-junction of India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh, making it a key player in India's Act East Policy. The Governor emphasized the cordial relations Mizoram maintains with its neighboring countries, which have contributed to a largely peaceful border atmosphere with few major incidents. Reflecting on the state's history, he recalled that although Mizoram experienced periods of unrest in the past, the historic Mizoram Peace Accord of 1986 marked the beginning of enduring peace and stability. He described Mizoram as one of India's most literate states, having been officially recognized as the country's first fully literate state, and popularly known as the "Ginger Capital of India." The Governor also spoke about the impressive pace of development and progress across multiple sectors in the state.
Focusing on infrastructure, he termed the 51.38 km Bairabi-Sairang New Railway Line - inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on September 13, 2025 - a game changer for Mizoram. He informed the team that the project is set to be extended further southward over 200 km to Zorinpui in southern Mizoram. This extension will connect with the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP), eventually linking up to Paletwa and Sittwe Port in Myanmar. Such enhanced connectivity, he noted, is expected to usher in transformative socio-economic development not only for Mizoram but for the entire Northeast region and the country at large. On the issue of border security, the Governor acknowledged that Mizoram's proximity to international borders makes it vulnerable to attempts at drug smuggling. He assured that the government remains highly vigilant and is committed to taking all necessary steps to prevent illegal cross-border activities, including drug trafficking and other unlawful transactions. He further added that as a predominantly tribal and Christian-majority state, Mizoram greatly benefits from the constructive influence and active role of the Church, the Young Mizo Association (YMA), and other NGOs in upholding social discipline and harmony.
The members of the PIB Press Tour Team shared their positive impressions from their visit to Mizoram. They expressed deep appreciation for the state's scenic natural beauty and praised the local residents for their commendable civic sense – particularly their strict adherence to traffic rules, minimal use of vehicle horns leading to low noise pollution, and overall law-abiding, courteous behavior, which they described as exemplary.
The team had arrived in Mizoram on March 22 and visited several important sites, including the newly operational Sairang Railway Station, Thenzawl Solar Plant, Akashvani Aizawl, PIB Office, DDK Aizawl, and the popular tourist spot at Reiek. They also interacted with senior officials of the Department of Information & Public Relations (I&PR) and members of the Mizoram Journalists’ Association (MJA). The team is scheduled to return tomorrow.
The Press Tour Team is led by Dr. Vikram Singh, Media & Communication Officer, PIB Jalandhar, and is being hosted by Dr. Rajeev Lourembam, Head of Office, PIB Aizawl.
