Aizawl, March 11 Mizoram has spent ₹685.93 crore to procure electricity from external sources last year, state Power minister F Rodingliana informed the state Assembly on Wednesday.
Responding to a query from opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) legislator K Laldawngliana, the minister said that the state's internal power generation remained low as the total generation from both hydro and solar sources combined reached only 41 MU (Million Units) during the same period of January 2025 to January 2026.
He said that the government collected a revenue of ₹245.33 crore from consumers between January and December last year.
While the cost of procurement far outweighs the revenue generated from consumers, Rodingliana pointed out that the state has maintained a clean sheet with zero debt in these specific power purchases.
Officials said that the government is making massive efforts to become a power self-sufficient state.
In January, Chief Minister Lalduhoma laid the foundation stone for a ₹676.98 crore Tuirini small hydro power project in Aizawl district, which will have a generating capacity of 24 Megawatt (MW).
Officials said that more electric power projects are in the pipeline.
While the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for 132 MW Tuivai hydroelectric project in Saitual district near the Manipur border has been completed, the DPR for Tlawng hydro project near Aizawl is expected to be completed by September this year, they said.
