Aizawl, April 2 A Manipur Police officer and his associate were arrested in Kolasib town, Mizoram, near the Assam border, on Thursday, for allegedly possessing over 1 kg of heroin, an official said.

Peter Zohmingthanga, spokesperson for the Excise and Narcotics department, said the arrest was made during an operation in the Khuangpuilam area on Wednesday.

During the operation, officials intercepted a consignment of heroin weighing 1.215 kg, he said.

The 44-year-old police officer and his 24-year-old associate were arrested on the spot while allegedly transporting the contraband to Silchar in neighbouring Assam, the official said.

The two accused are from Churachandpur and Pherzawl districts in Manipur, he said.

An SUV with a Manipur registration number plate, which was allegedly used to transport the contraband, was also seized by the officials.

The two were booked under section 21 (c) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, and were produced before the Kolasib district and session court, Zohmingthanga said.
