The main opposition party, the Mizo National Front (MNF) in Mizoram, has released the list of its candidates for the upcoming elections to the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC).

The schedule for the 19-member municipal corporation elections has not yet been announced by the state election commission.

MNF president Zoramthanga announced the names of candidates for the 19 wards during a function held at the Vanapa hall here.

Speaking at the event, Zoramthanga expressed confidence that his party would retain power in the municipal corporation.

"I believe this is one of the most distinguished groups of candidates that the MNF has ever fielded. Their backgrounds clearly demonstrate their capabilities," he said, urging voters to cast their votes in favor of the MNF candidates in their respective wards.

"With the grace of God and the support of the people, I am confident that we will secure a victory," he added.

Criticizing the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) government led by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, the MNF chief alleged that it had not fulfilled its pre-election promises, leading to public dissatisfaction with the ZPM rule.

"They have not done everything they promised to do, and they have done everything they promised not to do. The people of Mizoram are fed up with the ZPM government," the former Chief Minister said.

Pointing to recent electoral trends as evidence of waning support, Zoramthanga said, "They (ZPM) lost in the Sinlung Hills elections, performed poorly in the village and local councils polls, and lost again in the assembly election to the Dampa seat."

In the Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) elections held in December last, the MNF came in first, while the ZPM finished third, he said.

Earlier, the Congress had announced the names of 13 candidates for the urban body polls.

The Mizoram State Election Commission (SEC) has stated that the elections may be held in April or May.

In the last AMC elections held in February 2021, the MNF won a majority, securing 11 seats, while the ZPM secured 6 seats and the Congress won 2 seats.
