Fire damages Jadav Payeng’s Molai Forest 2.0
Individuals are alleged to have set fire to Molai Forest 2.0, causing extensive damage to the man-made forest in the Jorhat-Majuli area.
The fire was reported on Wednesday, resulting in damage to nearly 200 hectares of forest land. The forest, developed under the supervision of Payeng's daughter, Munmuni Payeng, has been repeatedly targeted. Following the first incident in December last year, another fire was reported again on February 11 and once more on Wednesday.
Jadav Payeng has lodged complaints with the Forest Minister, the Majuli district administration, and the Forest Department. He stated that locals from nearby cattle sheds and riverine areas may have set the fire while attempting to drive away wild animals.
Payeng has also demanded the establishment of a permanent Forest Department camp in the area to prevent further incidents.
