New Delhi, March 24 Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla announced on Tuesday that the resignation of MP Pradyut Bordoloi from Assam, who had quit the Congress and joined the BJP, has been accepted.

Bordoloi, who was elected to the Lok Sabha from Nagaon for two consecutive terms on a Congress ticket, resigned from the opposition party on March 17 and subsequently joined the BJP.

The saffron party gave him a ticket to contest the upcoming Assam assembly elections from the Dispur seat a day later.

The Speaker said that Bordoloi's resignation as a Lok Sabha MP has been accepted, effective March 20.

Bordoloi served as a minister in Assam's then Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government for 15 years before being elected to the Lok Sabha for two terms.
