Gangtok, March 23 Municipal elections in Sikkim will be held on April 24, and the vote counting will take place the following day, State Election Commissioner (SEC) K C Lepcha said on Monday.

The nomination filing will begin on March 30, and scrutiny will take place on March 31, he told reporters here.

The last date for withdrawing nominations is April 4.

Polling will be held from 8 am to 5 pm on April 24, and vote counting will begin at 8 am on April 25, he said.

The elections will be held in nine municipalities and nagar panchayats. A total of 93,800 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in 121 polling stations across six districts, Lepcha said.

The election panel has completed all preparations for the smooth conduct of the municipal elections in the Himalayan state, he added.

Meanwhile, the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) announced the candidates for the polls on Monday evening.

Among the nominees are Nell Bahadur Chettri from Upper Burtuk Ward and Tshering Palden Bhutia from Development Area Ward – both of whom are being renominated.

Pemnorbu Bhutia from Upper Gurpisey Ward, Mamta Kalikotey from Lower Gurpisey, and Sanju Mangar from Majhitar Ward have also been nominated by the SKM.

Party spokesperson Jacob Khaling expressed confidence in securing a landslide victory under Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang.
