Myanmar's Military Chief Takes Presidential Role.webp

April 03, New Delhi: Myanmar's junta chief, Min Aung Hlaing, has been elected as the country's president in a parliamentary vote held on Friday in the capital, Naypyidaw. In the election across both the upper and lower houses, Min Aung Hlaing secured a resounding victory, receiving 429 out of 584 votes in a three-candidate race.

He is expected to assume office this month, while his two competitors will serve as vice presidents under him. This transition from top general to civilian president follows the general elections held in December and January, which were decisively won by a party backed by the army.

Myanmar's military has ruled the country for most of the past six decades, maintaining power through armed conflicts and suppression of dissent. Democratic reforms were briefly introduced in 2011, but full military control was restored with the 2021 coup.
