Nagaland Budget Sees Broad Support with Key Concerns Raised.webp

March 27, Kohima: Several members of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly participated in the general discussion on the State Budget 2026-27, expressing broad support while also raising key developmental concerns.

Initiating the discussion, NPF MLA Hekani Jakhalu described the budget as visionary and inclusive, aimed at bringing farmers, women, and youth into the state's growth journey.

Ms. Jakhalu also praised the budget's gender-focused approach to support women.

BJP MLA A. Pangjung Jamir also supported the budget, while calling for the sanctioning of a new Administrative Office building at Tuli and the commissioning of more sports disciplines under the newly announced CM's Sports Advancement Initiative.

NPF MLA KT Sukhalu raised concerns over growing drug abuse and called for stronger policy interventions. He also suggested a review of the NLTP Act for better regulation and public welfare.

Meanwhile, NPF MLA Tongpang Ozukum called for the completion of the Trans-Nagaland Highway (Foothill Road).

NPF MLA Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome commended the budget as 'rare', highlighting improved fiscal prudence and management.

While Independent MLA Dr. Neisatuo Mero called it pragmatic and responsive to people's aspirations.

NPF MLA Achumbemo Kikon urged the Central Government to give due importance to Nagaland in the 16th Finance Commission. He expressed gratitude for the enhancement of the Local Area Development Programme fund for MLAs and suggested that it be named "Vamuzo Local Area Development Programme" in honour of the former Chief Minister Vamuzo Phesao. He further urged the Government to reconsider increasing budgetary allocations for border areas.

Regarding the FNTA issue, he emphasized that the State Government had carefully considered the demands put forward by the Eastern Nagaland People's Organisation. Mr. Kikon clarified that the deferment of the FNTA Bill should not be misinterpreted or blamed on the state government.
