New Mexico Jury Finds Meta Accountable for Child Exploitation

March 25, New Delhi — A jury in New Mexico ruled that Meta Platforms is liable for exposing children to online dangers, including predators, on its platforms.

The decision followed a six-week trial in which the state argued that Facebook and Instagram failed to protect minors from exploitation and trafficking. While prosecutors sought $2.2 billion, the jury awarded $375 million in damages.

Attorney General Raúl Torrez called the verdict a major victory for families. Meta said it plans to appeal, maintaining that it works to protect users. A second phase will consider further penalties, while a similar case proceeds in California.
