
The Union Cabinet has approved the proposal to change the name of the State of Kerala to Keralam. Speaking to the media after the Cabinet meeting, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that after Cabinet approval, the President of India will refer a Bill, namely the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026, to the State Legislative Assembly of Kerala to seek its views.
The Minister said that after receiving the views of the State Legislative Assembly of Kerala, the Government of India will take further action, and the recommendation of the President will be obtained for introducing the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026, in Parliament to change the State's name. He added that the Legislative Assembly of Kerala had passed a resolution on June 24, 2024, to change the State's name.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved three multi-track projects covering eight districts across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand. The total estimated cost of the projects is nine thousand 72 crore rupees and they will be completed by 2030-31.
