Poonch, February 24: Shri Krishan Chander Government Degree College, Poonch, has been granted autonomous status by the University Grants Commission (UGC), making it the second college in the Jammu province to receive this recognition after Government Women College, Parade.

This autonomy will allow the college to design its own curriculum, introduce innovative courses, conduct examinations, and adopt flexible academic practices. Principal Jasbir Singh highlighted plans to introduce departments for local languages such as Pahari, Gojri, and Poonchi, promoting regional heritage.

The decision is expected to benefit over 10,000 students by enhancing academic flexibility, research opportunities, and skill-based education, while elevating the institution's standards and reputation across the Pir Panjal region.
