Two new underpasses have been completed at the Sangoor Chowk and Gole Mela Chowk on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) to improve road safety and ease traffic congestion in Udhampur.
Previously considered major accident-prone areas, these busy intersections experienced frequent accidents and heavy traffic due to the lack of a safe crossing for local vehicles. With the construction of the underpasses, local traffic has now been separated from the high-speed highway movement, significantly reducing the risk of accidents.
Residents have welcomed the development, stating that the underpasses have improved traffic flow and made commuting safer and smoother for locals as well as tourists.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, recently highlighted that approximately ₹171.25 crore worth of safety works have been completed on NH-44, including rectification of accident-prone areas and the development of modern roadside amenities along the highway.
