New Delhi, March 18 The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, has informed the National Green Tribunal that a budget of over Rs 60.7 lakh is required to conduct a study for the use of ultraviolet (UV) technology for disinfection in sewage treatment plants (STPs).

The green body was hearing the matter regarding the non-functioning STPs installed by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) along the river Yamuna.

It had earlier requested the IIT to examine the feasibility and effectiveness of the use of UV technology for disinfection across 14 STPs in the national capital, besides disclosing the UV wavelength, intensity, exposure time and distance required to kill the fecal coliform in the sewage.

In an order dated March 17, a bench of NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and expert member Afroz Ahmad said that, according to the IIT's communication of January 13, an estimated budget of around Rs 60.7 lakh, inclusive of GST and institute overheads, was needed to conduct the study across 14 STPs.

The institute further requested the remittance of the said amount to proceed further, the bench said, adding that the DJB's counsel sought time to obtain instructions regarding the payment.

“The DJB is directed to file the affidavit in respect of payment of expenses/amount to the IIT, Delhi, within 10 days,” the tribunal said, posting the matter for further proceedings on April 1.
