NH44: Traffic Suspended Due to Karool-Chanderkote Landslide.webp

In Jammu and Kashmir, vehicular traffic on the 270-km-long strategic Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH44) was completely suspended last night after continuous landslides and falling rocks blocked both lanes of the highway between Karool Bridge and Chanderkote. An Akashvani Jammu correspondent reports that according to traffic police, the two lanes/roads in the affected area became unsafe due to heavy debris and falling rocks, forcing authorities to halt vehicular movement from both the Jammu and Srinagar sides. Vehicles were stopped at safer locations to prevent any accidents. Traffic Control Units (TCUs) were immediately alerted, and heavy motor vehicles (HMVs) and light motor vehicles (LMVs) were advised not to operate until at least one lane is cleared. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic NHW, Raja Adil Hamid, said that clearance operations by the National Highways Authority began this morning. However, intermittent falling rocks continued to hinder the work. Officials on the spot estimated that it may take at least 5 to 6 hours to make the lower lane traffic-worthy, depending on the improvement in conditions.
