The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will implement an AI-powered dashcam monitoring system for operations and management across approximately 40,000 kilometers of the national highway network. The Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways stated that this initiative utilizes Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to improve the use of high-tech, data-driven operations and maintenance for national highways and expressways throughout the country. The project aims to enhance remote tracking and road condition assessments using high-resolution imagery and video data. Specialized dashcams will be mounted on Route Patrol Vehicles (RPVs) to conduct comprehensive weekly surveys of all stretches. The Ministry emphasized that this method will also cover road furniture, including the real-time identification of damaged or faded lane markings, crash barriers, and non-functional streetlights.
The Ministry stated that five zones have been strategically created across the country to ensure systematic data monitoring. It said that a specialized IT platform with dedicated modules for data management, AI analytics, and interactive visualization dashboards will be developed specifically for this purpose. It added that the solution also allows for side-by-side comparisons of road conditions over time, enabling the NHAI to precisely track maintenance progress and repair efficiently. The Ministry further noted that the AI-generated results will also be integrated into the central NHAI Data Lake platform for seamless monitoring and ensuring timely rectification of defects.
