March 17, New Delhi — Multiple explosions rocked Maiduguri in northeastern Nigeria on Monday evening, with police saying the blasts were caused by suspected suicide bombers.
The explosions occurred in areas including the city’s main market and near a hospital, leaving several people injured as emergency teams rushed victims to nearby medical facilities.
Authorities say explosive disposal teams were deployed to multiple blast sites as security forces sealed off parts of the city.
The attacks come after an overnight assault on a military post near Maiduguri, believed to have been carried out by militants linked to Boko Haram or the Islamic State West Africa Province.
Officials say the insurgent campaign in northeastern Nigeria has killed more than 40,000 people and displaced around two million over the past decade.
