New Delhi, March 11 A 30-year-old man, previously involved in a murder case, was shot dead in the Madangir area of South Delhi, police said on Tuesday, suspecting it to be an act of revenge.
The victim, Nikhil Nagar, also known as Nikki, was allegedly involved in a murder case and had recently been released from jail, they said.
Police suspect the attack may have been carried out in retaliation for the previous killing, although they said all angles are being investigated.
The incident occurred around 8:30 pm on Monday when Nikhil was standing outside his chicken shop near his residence in Ambedkar Nagar.
Motorcycle-borne assailants arrived at the scene and opened fire at him before fleeing, police said.
Nikhil sustained multiple bullet injuries and collapsed at the scene. Family members and locals rushed him to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, where he was pronounced dead, they said.
Senior police officers, along with the crime team and forensic experts, reached the scene after receiving information about the shooting. A murder case has been registered, and CCTV cameras in the area are being reviewed to identify the attackers and track their movements.
Babita, a neighbor and relative of the victim, said she heard the gunshot before residents rushed out of their homes.
"I was inside when I heard a gunshot. Then we rushed outside. Nikhil is around 30 years old. The incident happened around 8:50 pm. He lives with his family, including his brother and sister. His parents have passed away. He was a nice person and treated everyone well," she said.
Another resident, Bhushan Kumar, said Nikhil was standing outside a shop when the attackers fired at him.
"We don't know exactly what happened, but he was a good person. His father had just passed away a couple of months ago," Kumar said.
Police said Nikhil lived with his younger brother and sister in Madangir and ran a chicken shop near his house.
Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the attackers.
