
Noida, April 8 A 21-year-old student from a private university drowned while allegedly taking a bath in a water-filled pit at an abandoned construction site here, police said on Wednesday.
According to an official statement, the incident took place within the jurisdiction of the Sector 126 police station, where four students had gone for a small picnic after their exams.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Noida) Saad Miyan Khan said the students visited an old, abandoned construction area near Supernova.
"One of the students, identified as Harshit Bhatt, a resident of Indirapuram in Ghaziabad, entered a nearby water-filled area to bathe. During this, he suddenly drowned," the officer said.
The incident was reported to the Dial 112 emergency service by one of his companions, following which police response vehicle (PRV) personnel and local police team rushed to the spot.
Police arranged for local divers, who retrieved the student from the water pit. He was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead, the statement said.
Officials said other students who had entered the water in an attempt to rescue him were safely pulled out and are stable.
"All aspects of the incident are being investigated, and further legal proceedings are underway," the DCP added.
Harshit Bhatt was a final-year student of Amity School of Physical Education.
According to a statement issued by the university, Bhatt had left the campus on Wednesday after writing his exam in the afternoon.
"We were informed by police about his death. Police is investigating the cause of his death and we are fully cooperating with police. We express our deepest condolences to the bereaved family members," the statement read.
