Peshawar, April 1 At least six people were killed and two others were injured when a gunman opened fire on a meeting of tribal elders in northwest Pakistan, police said on Wednesday.

The incident took place in the Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where members of the Istrana tribe had gone to meet Zulfiqar Marwat, a wanted suspect, to resolve a dispute over a stolen motorcycle, police said.

During the meeting, the suspect opened fire on the jirga members, killing six people on the spot and injuring two others, police said.

Marwat fled the scene on a motorcycle. Later, police launched a search operation to apprehend him.

Marwat and his accomplices opened fire on the police when they raided a location following intelligence of their presence.

He was killed in retaliatory fire by the police. Some weapons and a motorcycle were recovered from the scene.
